Dogs, just like other pets, are susceptible to allergies. The most worrying fact is that allergies have no cure. However, there are several proven ways of allergy relief for dogs. Allergens include pollens, molds, grasses and mites. Eliminating these allergens is quite difficult. This is because pets are playful and may contact the allergens from outside the house.

Among the methods that can eliminate allergens are dusting your home with a damp cloth, keeping all windows closed, vacuuming and running air filters. It is also advisable to quit smoking in the house especially if you are addicted to tobacco because pets are allergic to the smell of smoke. You can also wash your bedding with warm water and a perfume free detergent. Use beddings and couches made of cotton rather than wool fabric in your home.

Keep pets away from garages, laundry rooms, damp basements and dusty barns. When mowing your lawn, the pets should also be kept far away. Clean the feet of your pet whenever it enters the house from playing outside. The animal should always stay indoors during early mornings and late evenings because pollens are high amidst these hours. Furthermore, do not use cedar kennels to shelter a pet.

Give your dog fresh food and any uneaten food must be stored safely in a functional freezer. When storing the food, use bowls made of stainless glass. Do not use plastic bowls because they stain easily. There are a number of natural remedies that relieve allergies in pets. One of them is foods rich in fat. Fatty acids usually take about three weeks for them to dissolve and boost the body immunity of a pet.

Yucca is widely used by pet owners these days as an effective and natural alternative for allergy relief. This product works well when combined with pet food. Alternatively, as a pet owner, you can opt to use the product as a body lotion for your pet. In this case, apply a small portion of the product on the fur after bathing the pet.

Conditioners and shampoos are also effective in easing allergies. Relief shampoo contains ingredients such as fatty acids and oatmeal that relieve itching when applied to animal skin. Other shampoos contain soothing moisturizers and emollients that help to mitigate allergic symptoms in pets.

Antihistamines are usually used as the first drug whenever a pet has allergy. However, this drug is ineffective in about eighty percent of pets. Speak to your veterinary doctor to find out whether your dog reacts to antihistamines. If it does not react to the drug, obtain a prescription from the veterinary doctor and ensure that your pet takes the drug as prescribed.

Oral steroids suppress allergies but their capacity to do so reduces each time they are consumed. Along these lines, a steroid injection can assist to eliminate symptoms in a particular pet six weeks after it is used for the first time. For steroids to be effective, they should be given in high doses during the first time and then in reduced doses overtime. This helps to reduce side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, increased appetite, aggression and irritability.
